MELBOURNE key forward Mitch Clark is ready to test his repaired right foot with light running next week.

It's a timely return with the Demons the first AFL club to start their pre-season campaign on Monday week.

Coach Mark Neeld said Clark had completed the rehab after surgery on the ligament and bone damage that forced the gun goalkicker to miss the second half of the season.

"He won't be in full training, but he's not far away. He'll be in full training prior to Christmas," Neeld said.

Clark made an outstanding start with the Demons after being picked up in a trade from Brisbane. He had 29 goals in 11 games until he limped off in the second quarter against the Giants at the MCG.

He was diagnosed with a severe Lisfranc injury, most commonly caused by excessive impact to the foot's arch, and the same ailment that ended Hawthorn premiership forward Trent Croad's career.

Collingwood recruit Chris Dawes, who will partner Clark as the tall forward targets in 2013, will meet his new teammates during a week of medical screening and introductory light running and weights sessions at AAMI Park.

Forward Aaron Davey (foot), defender Clint Bartram (knee) and ruckman Max Gawn (knee) are ready to jump straight into the heavy pre-season work.

Cale Morton (shoulder) is still on a modified program and Jamie Bennell, who had a knee reconstruction, won't resume until mid-season.

"The majority of our players will be ready to go because a number of them had surgery prior to the end of the home-and-away rounds," Neeld said.

Neeld said he was ready to start his second summer armed with deeper knowledge of the players "having come in cold" with elite performance manager David Misson for pre-season preparations 12 months ago.

"The intensity of the (strength and conditioning) program will go up around 15 to 20 percent. Having the players go through one of David's pre-seasons, they're much better prepared to know what that means," Neeld said.

"And in terms of where we want to get to, we probably operated about 60 percent last year. We're still probably a quarter away from where we want to get to."

The Demons will remain active in the trade period's final week and a couple of rookies, possibly midfielders James Magner and Tom Couch, will be elevated to the senior list.
