CARLTON coach Mick Malthouse has revealed the four key areas he can improve the Blues in 2013.

Speaking to the Herald Sun from Flagstaff in Arizona on the eve of a 4000m climb up Mt Humphreys today, Malthouse, 59, was at pains not to tip a bucket on Brett Ratten's previous coaching panel.

But he believed his game plan, more consistency, wins against tough sides early in the season and getting more continuity in game-time for his players would be the difference.

Malthouse would not guarantee a number of wins for Carlton (it won 11 games this season and finished 10th).

"We play some pretty red-hot teams early on, but if we can win games you will see form improve and in doing so pinch another 2 to 3 per cent," he said.

"Put that on top of the 11 wins this year and all of a sudden you are talking 12-13 wins."

Malthouse, who was enthusiastic about his return to coaching, likened the Blues to the Collingwood squad he took over 13 seasons ago.

"My first impression was how humble this playing group is and how quiet they are," he said.

"I don't know what they are like when they cross the white line and probably hope they become more boisterous.

"There are some very, very good players, then there are some with self-doubt, then there are some who have recently arrived and don't know where they sit in the group.

"Then others think a change will give them a chance. This camp is all about that. Giving players some clear space in front of them."

As for who will captain the club, with suggestions Chris Judd is ready to hand it over to Marc Murphy or Andrew Carrazzo, the squad is voting on the leadership group.

Malthouse and his match committee will make a recommendation to the board with a decision expected early January.

"I don't like leaders who are chosen from the coaching panel," Malthouse said.

"It would be unfair of me to say if I have spoken to Chris Judd (about the captaincy)."
