THE Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority has offered to lift a ban on a footballer if he dobs in another performance-enhancing drugs violator.

The Herald Sun can reveal the ASADA wrote to AFL aspirant Wade Lees trying to strike a deal by giving a discount of up to 75 per cent off his 18-month suspension if he helped it nail an offender.

A reduction of just 31 weeks - or 40 per cent - off Lees' ban would allow the VFL midfielder to return for Round 1.

His AFL Victoria sanction, which ASADA last week chose not to appeal despite it falling short of a maximum two-year penalty, will expire on November 10 this year.

The letter read: "Your sanction may be reduced by up to three-quarters if you are able to provide substantial assistance in the discovery or establishment of an anti-doping rule violation by another person."

Lees would not comment last night, except to say he did not share the letter publicly. A source close to the 24-year-old said he was not considering taking up ASADA's deal.

"He was pretty shocked. I don't think he's going to try and find someone and put them through the hell he's gone through for three years," the source said.

"He doesn't know anyone cheating, and if he did he wouldn't take up that dodgy offer."

An ASADA spokesman said the offer formed part of the World Anti-Doping Code, by which it abides.

"WADA is ultimately responsible for approving substantial assistance," he said.

"Generally speaking, the recent USADA case against Lance Armstrong demonstrates that reduced sanctions can encourage athletes to provide information that leads to the discovery of doping violations by others."

Lees bought a fat burner from the US in 2010. Customs intercepted the $180 product and passed it to ASADA. It was found to contain traces of steroids.

Lees was charged with attempted use of a prohibited substance, but claimed at the VFL Tribunal hearing he was unaware it contained a banned substance.
