Victoria police say the issue of organised crime links to the supply of performance enhancing drugs in sport is a legal grey area

The AFL announce new measures to their Integrity Commission to catch drug cheats including more investigators and more drug testing.

Fox Sports legend Mike Gibson gives his two-cents on drugs and match fixing in Australian sport.

THE short journey from syringe needle to skinfold generally traces back to some shady South-East Asian sterilisation.

In countries such as Thailand and China, wine and sunscreen bottles are thoroughly cleaned in preparation for some extremely lucrative content.

Human growth hormone (HGH), steroids or milder stimulants such as peptides are distilled into liquid and poured into the innocuous containers.

Once sealed and labelled, the bottles can then arrive in Australia by various means.

They might be mailed. They might be sent in ship's cargo.

Or - most disturbingly - they might be smuggled straight through airport customs by flight attendants on the payroll of suppliers Down Under.

According to yesterday's earth-shattering conclusions of the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) anti-doping investigation, those suppliers are highly likely to be involved in organised crime.

The Daily Telegraph yesterday spoke with several users of HGH and steroids - on the condition of anonymity. They might inject different substances, but the consensus was generally the same.

Doping supply generally extends back to crime syndicates - such as motorcycle gangs - who are also involved in narcotics.

"Look at what happens when bikies get raided. They always find the same things - guns, cocaine and steroids," one source said.

The link between our cherished sporting heroes and criminal gangs isn't nearly as extensive as the chain of murky connections involved in delivering these substances Down Under.

They can easily fraternise through local gyms. The venue of choice for Gen Y footballers - tattoo parlours - are another breeding ground for such disturbing connections.

Paul Marsh, chairman of the Australian Athletes' Alliance, yesterday nominated the criminal link as the most jaw-dropping finding of the day's slew of disturbing revelations.

"We are particularly concerned with the findings that organised crime is involved in Australian sport and that some coaches, sport scientists and support staff of elite athletes may have orchestrated or condoned the use of prohibited substances and methods of administration," Marsh said.

At the top level, however, players are constantly reminded about the risks of ingesting innocent substances such as Sudafed that might contravene the WADA anti-doping code.

The risk for professional footballers arrives when a consultant sports scientist - or doctor from outside the club - offers them borderline supplements.

The Daily Telegraph was yesterday told about a middle-aged man from Castle Hill who was supplying an entire football team with peptides.

They can also be obtained from horse owners, who can legally access the drugs for use on their animals.

And they don't come cheap. The going rate for a 10 millilitre vial is between $150 and $200 - depending on how strong the contents.

At that price, one can appreciate the appeal of trafficking for a lowly-paid flight attendant.

A container of peptides disguised as a bottle of wine could be worth as much as $14,000.

"The big thing is the bottles have to be very carefully sterilised, because you're injecting the contents straight into someone's body," one source said.

"You might inject twice a week. Over the course of 10 or 12 weeks you could put on 10kg worth of lean muscle."
