GUN recruit Brent Moloney says Brisbane's young midfield brigade is ready to join the AFL's elite.
The former Melbourne star knew only too well what the likes of Daniel Rich, Jack Redden, Tom Rockliff and Co were capable of doing long before he arrived at the Gabba late last year.
The ball-magnet was kept to just 13 touches in the 41-point loss to Brisbane at the MCG in round 1 last season, with Lions tagger Claye Beams winning the NAB Rising Star nomination for his shutdown role.
Moloney, 28, fared only marginally better in round 14 when he had 16 disposals in Melbourne's 61-point loss to the Lions at the Gabba.
So it was with excitement that he headed north after severing ties with the Demons after an unhappy 2012.
Moloney was Melbourne's best-and-fairest winner in 2011 when he also polled 19 Brownlow Medal votes.
At his best, Moloney will give the Brisbane midfield extra experience, class and inside muscle.
"These young guys are ready to take their game to the next level. I really respected the guys like Richy, Reddo and Rocky as opposition players before I got here," he said.
"They are only going to get even better. Throw in guys like Claye Beams and Pearce Hanley as well and it's an exciting time for the club."
The Lions will take on the Gold Coast Suns and Hawthorn at Metricon Stadium on Saturday night in round 1 of the NAB Cup.
Skipper Gary Ablett has confirmed he will line-up for the Gold Coast against Brisbane only.
"I'll be playing the second game against Brisbane and hopefully building up from there and be ready for round 1 (of the premiership)," he said.
The Suns play Hawthorn in the first of the night's games and then Brisbane in the final match.
