Lions miss their Rich picking

Defender Jed Adcock "honoured" to be named co-captain of Brisbane Lions, alongside Jonathan Brown.

BRISBANE had the chance to be bold yesterday.

But the Lions took the conservative route and appointed defender Jed Adcock as the club's co-captain alongside superstar Jonathan Brown for this season.

Brown last week said there was no wrong answer to the question of who should be co-captain.

But failing to install Daniel Rich in the top leadership post is an opportunity lost.

Rich and fellow 22-year-old Tom Rockliff have been appointed vice-captains behind Brown and Adcock.

Brisbane made current senior coach Michael Voss co-captain of the Bears when he was just 21 years old.

It was certainly brave.

After being thrown in the deep end at such a tender age with such a young list, Voss would go on to be one of the truly great captains of the modern era.

The Lions had the chance to do something similar with Rich.

But Brown, who was on the selection panel, said Adcock's greater on-field experience got him the nod.

With 141 games since his senior debut in 2004,

the 27-year-old's communication skills, toughness and work ethic have won him the respect of the playing group and coaching staff.

"To be recognised as a co-captain is a huge honour," Adcock said.

"I don't think it's going to change my role in any way. On-field, nothing changes for me."

Voss said Adcock's four-year tenure in the leadership group made him a standout candidate.

"In the end it became quite compelling that he seemed to be the right guy," Voss said of Adcock.

"The other two started to pop their heads out too and were just as convincing, (but) ... the platform we work from is what in our best interests now. This fits."

Adcock will do a fine job. He is a genuine leader. But he is a safe choice.

In the highly competitive Brisbane sporting market, the Lions need more than a rock-solid on-field leader like the ever-dependable Adcock.

They need a figurehead, a face of the club, an instantly recognisable and marketable star to help promote the club and keep it relevant and edgy.

That person is Rich, who is an emerging AFL star who ticks all the boxes.
