RACING integrity boss Sal Perna says phone taps and surveillance will prove a critical tool in the AFL and NRL's fight against crime.

Perna's inquiry into race-fixing made mention of those tools, as racing and other sports push for greater information-sharing with police.

The Herald Sun reported on Thursday the AFL wanted information gathered from advanced surveillance techniques, including phone tapping.

AFL chief Andrew Demetriou denied on Channel 7's drugs summit on Thursday night the league had requested information from phone taps. That was contrary to briefings from the AFL, which yesterday conceded information gleaned from phone taps would be one form of intelligence-sharing if approved.

Perna said without information sharing, sports could not act on intelligence that linked sportsmen to crime.

"The sporting bodies know law enforcement are doing some work around participants in their sport and to not get hold of that information is terribly frustrating," Perna said this week.

"If you take the AFL and other codes into consideration they are grappling with what they can do.

"There is legislation that prohibits law enforcement passing on information from telephone taps. Should that be changed and in what circumstances should we get it (information)?"

Sports would need changes to the Telecommunications Act to access information from surveillance and wire taps. Said one AFL source: "I think (the push) is predominantly about wire taps. It does open up issues around the Telecommunications Act. It's not a simple task. But it is something we feel pretty strongly about."

The league could receive information from wire taps and surveillance which would enable its integrity team to uncover links between football and organised crime.
