MARCH is traditionally the month when footballers talk about having bulked up over summer and how they are stronger and fitter and ready to rip into the season.

Unfortunately the ugly peptide cloud floating over Australian sport means such comments could end up being the proverbial "taken out of context''.

So we thought we'd delve into the vault and find photographs of 22 footballers whose physiques tell you that they have probably barely been near a dumbbell, let alone a dodgy bodybuilding supplement purchased over the internet.

These guys could really play, and prove that for every Micky Conlan or "Tank'' O'Donohue there is a lean, elegant wingman or a scrawny goalsneak capable of winning a game off his own boot.

They have also provided Australian football with some of its timeless nicknames, ones that have found their way into local clubs around the country: monikers such as Skinny, Sticks, Twiggy and Bones.

If you have a suggestion for a player who should have been included in this collection, or have an idea for a Catch 22 theme you'd like to see on Superfooty, post a suggestion to Warwick Green on Twitter:
