Catch me if you can, says Jetta

LEWIS Jetta's rise to the elite level of the AFL has been almost as fast as his grand final sprint when he left Hawthorn's fastest Cyril Rioli in his wake.

It's happened so quickly Jetta can barely believe it's happening to him.

"Just watching (that grand final moment) on TV, I still can't believe I did that," Jetta told The Daily Telegraph.

The almost childish reaction to his achievements belies a steely drive which has taken Jetta into the elite category of the AFL. However, the 23-year-old rising star is determined not to be a one-season wonder.

The off season saw him back in WA with his family but it was no holiday with daily 6am rises and lots of running.

Jetta's hard work has paid off after improving his personal best for the 3km time trial by 50 seconds.

"I know I'm gonna need it if I'm getting more attention (from opposition) this year," Jetta said.

"I want to run them off their feet.

"If I don't get my opponents in the first, second or third quarters I can get them in the last quarter."

After famously kicking 19 points before landing his first goal in senior football Jetta has developed into the Swans most dangerous attacking weapon - with a team-high 45 goals last season.

Jetta has clearly thrived under the leadership of coach John Longmire, who is just the right person to keep the speedster's feet on the ground.

"He's got a determination which is underrated," Longmire said.

"He had a fantastic season but it's just one season, it's just a start.

"He's working hard and he's a terrific kid who's trusted by the players. "The true stars put in great performances year in, year out."

Jetta's rapid rise has been helped by Adam Goodes.

"He's taught me a lot," Jetta said.

"He's a superstar of the game. The way he goes about his business is unbelievable."

With Goodes in the twilight years of his career Jetta appears to be the perfect player to take over the superstar's mantle when the 33 year-old eventually gives the game away.

"If I have to, I'm happy to," Jetta said.

Jetta is one of six senior stars including Jude Bolton, Josh Kennedy, Mike Pyke and Lewis Roberts-Thomson who return for the Swans in tomorrow's round two NAB Cup clash against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.
