GIANTS boss David Matthews wants to start the AFL season at least two weeks earlier to combat the head start the NRL gets with its season.

With Good Friday falling on April 18 next year, Matthews believes the 2014 season would be the perfect year to take the initiative.

"Our preference would be to start the season at Skoda Stadium," Matthews said. "You would love to get started well before Easter because it can be a very disruptive time.

"There's a real case for an early start in NSW and Queensland.

"We look forward to the day we get a sell-out at Skoda Stadium."

Matthews also said Hawks superstar Lance "Buddy" Franklin is a long way from joining the AFL's newest team but if he could land the Hawk he would be the perfect fit for the harbour city.

"There's not many players from Victoria who are instantly recognisable across Australia and he'd be one,"Matthews said. "Sydney will take some time to get to know Kurt Tippett but Buddy Franklin would walk straight in and they know he's a performer."

GWS will have a battle to lure the Hawthorn star, with Fremantle planning to offer Franklin $1.5 million a season.
