THE GWS Giants are set to play as many as three of their top draft picks in next week's Battle of the Bridge against the Swans.

Top pick Lachie Whitfield looks certain to play after an impressive display throughout the NAB Cup.

The 18-year-old hasn't put a foot wrong all pre-season and has looked comfortable against quality opposition midfielders.

Lachie Plowman, the third pick last year, was impressive in the Giants' 24-point win over St Kilda, booting an important last-quarter goal.

Young defender Aidan Corr (14th pick) has also performed well.

"On form they should be selected," Giants coach Kevin Sheedy told The Daily Telegraph. "For the first time at the Giants there's real competition for spots.

"There will be some disappointed players this week. It's a good position to be in."As well as the trio of youngsters, former Hawk Stephen Gilham will make his debut for the Giants and chalk up his 100th game after being left stranded on 99 games at Hawthorn.

Chad Cornes (knee) and Dom Tyson (knee) are the only regular players missing for the Giants, who are looking a lot stronger heading into round one than they did this time last year.

Last year the Giants flooded heavily to limit the damage as they fielded 14 debutants, equalling the record set by the Crows in their first game in 1991.

This time around both Swans coach John Longmire and Sheedy are expecting a vastly improved performance from the Giants.

"We're up for this game, don't worry about that," Sheedy said.

"We are looking forward to a contest and we'll get one from the defending premiers.

"They (the Swans) don't know what they'll get because they don't know us.

"You couldn't wish for a better game for us."

Beating the Swans on the field is only the start of Sheedy's problems with the Red and Whites after Josh Kennedy slammed the naming of the Swans-Giants match as the Battle of the Bridge.

Kennedy said the Swans represent all of Sydney.

"We don't really subscribe to it (the Battle of the Bridge), nor understand it. We're the Sydney Swans and we have been for 30 years," Kennedy said.

"We're not the East Sydney Swans. They can be Greater Western Sydney, but we've been part of Sydney for a long, long time."

Sheedy fired back: "The Battle of the Bridge is a great title for a Sydney match because we've got two great bridges.

"It's a title, it's like 'State of Origin. There's no lines, it's just a contest.

"I don't care where any Giants fans come from and likewise the Swans fans."
