ADELAIDE United's Jon McKain says players must have trust in interim coach Mike Valkanis or face becoming a Reds outcast.
McKain returns to Adelaide's line-up when it faces Melbourne Heart at AAMI Park on Monday after serving a one-match ban during the Reds lacklustre 1-0 loss to Brisbane Roar at home last Saturday.
"We've formed a group of players who want to go forward, (players) they can come on board or they can be left behind," McKain said.
"That's the beauty of sport - we've got the leaders in Euge (Galekovic) and Cass (Cassio) and Mickey (Valkanis) pushing it. There the older boys we're all going to support.
"Come along or you'll get left behind."
McKain, playing in a holding midfield role, has been one of the most vocal players during an intense training week at Kidman Park.
McKain has not been frightened to fire up his teammates as the squad perhaps showed what was at stake yesterday.
The Reds were on edge during a feisty internal trial at SASI's Kidman Park pitch where tackles were meaty and aggression was high.
It was exactly what McKain wanted to see three days before facing Heart.
After a form slump in which the Reds premier's plate hopes disappeared, McKain said the Reds were capable of rediscovering the form that had the side in top position for six weeks this season.
But he said some players were perhaps not yet on the same page, given Valkanis has tweaked the system after picking up just four points from the past six matches .
"Maybe it might get a bit confusing with what he's (Valkanis) trying to achieve," McKain said.
"But we're all professional players and everyone understood the game plan during the week.
"We've worked hard this week and we, as players, have to take responsibility to do our jobs and I'm sure you'll see a different team this week.
"It's down to buying into what the coach wants to do and I know for a fact the boys support what Mickey wants to do but it hasn't showed just yet.
"We're convinced that if we keep at it it's going to turn."
While McKain is expected to have another holding partner, possibly Fabian Barbiero, on Monday as Valkanis adjusts his tactics, long-term injury concern Fabio Ferreira yesterday showed signs that he is ready for action.
The Portuguese winger has been suffering from osteitis pubis.
Ferreira has not seen game time since making a cameo appearance in a 3-0 win over Sydney FC at Hindmarsh Stadium on New Year's Eve.
Dario Vidosic has also overcome an ankle injury he sustained during training on Tuesday.
