Brisbane smash Carlton in the final quarter to win NAB Cup.

IT'S impossible to hazard a guess on just how many quarter-time sprays Mick Malthouse has given in his 29 seasons in the coaching business.

And, to be fair, last night's version was a far tamer variety than some of those when the stakes were infinitely higher.

What Malthouse showed at the first break of play in last night's NAB Cup was words can be powerful for a time, but there are still going to be ebbs and flows in the way in which Carlton plays in year one.

Even before last night's game the man who has coached through seven different incarnations of the night series/pre-season competitions since 1984 admitted on 3AW that putting his unique stamp on this group of players would take some time.

It won't be achieved in a few months, he stressed. Perhaps not in one season.

There was a hint of that last night as the Brisbane Lions overpowered the Blues in the second half to win their first pre-season premiership cup.

Despite a second-term Carlton revival that occurred within six minutes of Malthouse's quarter-time reminder, the Lions deserved success.

Sure, it won't draw as many eyes as the real cups achieved in 2001-03, but the true reward came in the form of the confidence, flair and dare that Michael Voss' team showed last night. This Lions outfit seems to be far more advanced than most have given them credit for.

Dayne Zorko is a beauty. Daniel Rich can slice teams up with his left foot and deserved his Michael Tuck Medal. Pearce Handley uses the ball with precision. Josh Green knows how to set up and kick goals. And the big bloke, Jonathan Brown, remains a massive competitor.

Importantly, as much as Malthouse talked up the importance of winning last night, the Blues will also derive plenty out of what happened over the past month.

The coach knows that, even if he would have been frustrated by the turnaround that saw his team go from 13 points up at half-time to being overwhelmed in the second half.

Chris Judd played only a cameo in his first game of 2013 - spending a mix of time at half-forward and the forward line, while taking plenty of rest on the interchange before being subbed out. He has now brushed the cobwebs out.

Bryce Gibbs played where Carlton fans - and one suspects the man himself - want to see him, across the middle.

Matthew Kreuzer looks set for a big season, while Marc Murphy has bigger spoils to chase as captain.

There is still plenty of work to do for the Blues. Sorting out a forward line that still needs some fine tuning is part of it but so, too, is getting used to Malthouse's game style.

That will come in time. But the stakes will be much higher - and the crowd significantly bigger than the almost 25,000 last night - when Carlton takes on Richmond on Thursday week.

That's when we'll probably get a better gauge on just where the Blues are at.
