GRUMPY should come easily to Brad Scott, who was renowned for on-field aggression during his AFL playing career.

It's been a focus for the North Melbourne coach in the pre-season as he seeks more improvement from his developing team.

The Kangaroos are unbeaten so far in the NAB Cup and could make the final if they beat Geelong today at Simonds Stadium.

"I'm into my fourth year as coach now so I'm really working hard on the `grumpy coach pre-season' attitude," he said.

"I've been pretty grumpy the last three weeks - we always want to be better."

Scott was particularly displeased with North's centre bounce work in the final term of last week's win over Gold Coast.

"We want to be a good stoppage side. We want to be a good contested-ball side and I don't rate us in the top four in that area at the moment," he said.

Scott said North was a long way from settling its round-one side, with at least seven to be decided.

Recruit Daniel Currie will have his chance against the Cats after the Kangaroos gave him the No. 1 ruck role.

Todd Goldstein will play for North Ballarat in the VFL curtain-raiser.

"We see `Goldy' as an All-Australian-standard ruckman," Scott said. "It's a decision on balance to have a look at Dan.

"The easy thing to do would be to share the load and then get a shock in round one if we decide to go with a different system."

As the AFL puts more restrictions on interchanges, Scott said teams were less likely to play a specialist second ruckman.

"Most sides are realising that unless you have a very, very flexible ruckman, who can play significant time forward or who has the athletic ability of Nic Naitanui, it's becoming harder and harder," he said.

Currie, 24, came to North after not playing any AFL games at Sydney before pulling on the red and white of North Adelaide in the SANFL.

"Not too many players get a second opportunity so I'm very grateful for it," he said.
