AFL Players' Association boss Matt Finnis has urged the AFL to find a solution to Cricket Victoria's push for a new home to free up early-season MCG access.
The AFLPA chief executive yesterday said the potential 48-hour turnaround between a home Sheffield Shield final and the Round 1 match between Carlton and Richmond was a "totally avoidable" injury risk.
Cricket Victoria maintains access rights to the MCG until the end of March annually, but will step away from that deal should it win funding to build a proposed centre of excellence at the Junction Oval.
Victoria tops the Shield ladder and a win in its match against NSW starting today will go a long way towards ensuring an MCG final from March 22-26 because there is no alternative first-class venue.
The MCG turf would be cut to less than 12mm for that match, less than half of the ideal length for an AFL match two days later.
"There is a range of issues to deal with (such as) fixturing and commercial implications, but the one thing we can't compromise on here is the health and safety of our players," Finnis said.
"I have every confidence in all those involved -- the AFL, the MCG and its groundstaff -- and am confident that they can transform the venue from cricket to football within 48 hours.
"But the whole issue is that it's a foreseeable problem that puts undue pressure on a lot of different parties and that should be resolved."
Finnis said there would be clear recourse options if players were injured as a result of a hard or shifting ground surface.
Cricket Victoria is in discussions with the Victorian Government about its proposed revamp of the Junction Oval.
It is understood the AFL and MCC have been approached to chip in as both parties stand to benefit financially in the long-run with earlier access to the MCG for football and concerts.
