THE last time Brisbane utility Brent Staker donned the No.14 jumper in a game, Luke Power was still a Lion.

It was round 23 in 2011 and the Lions lost to West Coast in Power's last game for the club.

Staker suffered another serious knee injury in the defeat and had no idea of the heartache to come.

The former Eagle missed the entire 2012 season as he rehabilitated his reconstructed right knee.

Helping to coach the reserves side and doing jigsaw puzzles passed the time for the 28-year-old, who has played 29 senior games for the Lions since joining the club in 2010.

On track for a big start to 2013, Staker had to have surgery on cartilage damage in his left knee.

I hadn't missed a session all pre-season and the left knee just flared up out of the blue

He missed the NAB Cup win and watched helplessly as the Lions crashed to a 68-point away loss to the Western Bulldogs in round 1 last Saturday.

Staker will be in the all-too-familiar Gabba grandstands on Saturday when the Lions take on the Adelaide Crows.

He hopes to be back in action by the time Brisbane host West Coast in round 7.

"It's been a frustrating time," Staker said.

"I hadn't missed a session all pre-season and the left knee just flared up out of the blue.

"I had a bit of a flat spot after the boys won the NAB Cup and were heading into round 1. I kept to myself a little that week because when you are not playing, it can be difficult. You don't have any real input.

"Watching the boys lose is always the hardest thing though. You'd love to be out there trying to get the win but you feel a bit helpless.

"Hopefully it won't be too long before I'm back out there. It's certainly been a long wait."

Staker plans to play half a game in the reserves in two weeks with more game time in the NEAFL the following week before putting his hand up for senior selection.

Brisbane physical performance manager Brett Burton says defender Matt Maguire is in doubt for the clash against Adelaide after suffering a lower leg injury in the round 1 loss.
