GEELONG is awaiting specialist advice on Travis Varcoe's dislocated shoulder but expects surgery to be the likely outcome.
Varcoe is facing more time out of the game after dislocating his left shoulder in the opening quarter of Saturday night's win against Carlton at Etihad Stadium.
Should he have surgery, Varcoe could miss up to three months of football.
The 26-year-old played just one game last season because of stress fractures in his foot.
Football manager Neil Balme said the Cats were awaiting a medical recommendation.
"I would be surprised if he didn't have surgery," Balme said yesterday.
"He's still got to talk to the surgeon. Our docs are saying almost certainly (surgery), but you have still got to go through that process, so you never know.
"He was pretty disappointed. He has had a wretched run, but it's not out of the question (for him) to have an impact this year."
CARLTON ruckman Matthew Kreuzer meets club medical staff today to assess his broken thumb, but the Blues hope the injury is not as serious as first thought.
Carlton suggested yesterday the injury could sideline Kreuzer for up to five weeks, rather than eight weeks as initially reported.
It was unclear if Kreuzer would require surgery.
GREATER Western Sydney key forward Jonathon Patton will meet his surgeon today to discuss treatment options after tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament against St Kilda.
The Giants would not speculate yesterday whether LARS surgery would be an option for the 2011 No.1 draft pick.
The 19-year-old, who recently re-signed with the Giants until the end of 2015, travelled to Sweden for surgery last pre-season to treat patella tendinopathy in his left knee.
