BRISBANE'S hopes of challenging for a top eight berth are sheer fantasy on the evidence of a thrashing by North Melbourne at Etihad Stadium last night.

Brisbane's win-loss record stands at 1-3 after the diabolical 63-point defeat to the Kangaroos, but it was the nature of the largely uncompetitive display that spells big trouble for coach Michael Voss and his men.

Brisbane are in danger of going into complete freefall with seven of last year's top eight waiting for the Lions over the next 10 weeks.

The Lions were simply never in the contest as a rampant North Melbourne scored the first 31 points of the match.

They trailed by 32 points at quarter-time, stemmed the flow in the second term to be 32 points in arrears at the main break but the Kangaroos blew Brisbane off the park in the third quarter to lead by 65 points.

It was inexcusable and hard to watch. The Lions were outworked and outclassed.

Voss spoke before the match about the Lions needing to "get on their bikes early" to counter a fast-starting Roos.

Their tyres must have been flat because Brisbane showed little intensity or intent in the opening exchanges.

North Melbourne were desperate to record their first win of the season and had their way with Brisbane who served up costly turnovers from poor skills throughout the error-riddled effort.

The night got even worse for Brisbane when midfielder Jack Redden was reported for rough conduct after a contest with Kangaroo Ben Cunnington.

Utility Ash McGrath was forced out of the match at quarter-time after suffering a leg injury.

Midfield ace Pearce Hanley was also nursing a sore left knee.

Lions debutant Marco Paparone produced an eye-catching first senior game with three classy goals.

Brisbane must now face a buoyant Melbourne at the Gabba this Sunday.

The Demons have the same 1-3 record as the Lions and are coming off a 41-point win over GWS at the MCG yesterday.

A loss to the strife-riddled Demons would be nothing short of disastrous for the Lions, who look a completely different side from the squad that went through the NAB Cup undefeated.

Sudanese-born Majak Daw had a short but spectacular senior debut for the Kangaroos.

Daw - who requested 68 tickets for family and friends - took an outstanding mark in the first minute and kicked a goal to live up to the hype.

But his day was over later in the first quarter after a Daniel Merrett tackle caused a sickening head clash between Daw and Kangaroos teammate Cunnington that resulted in the giant ruckman/forward being knocked out and subbed out of the game.
