GOLD Coast's Zac Smith admits he took his eyes off the ball last season - a wedding will do that to you.

The highly regarded Smith, 23, enjoyed the best day of his life shortly after the season ended last year when he married fiancee Aimee.

Smith, regarded by many as a potential superstar, admits he may have got too caught up in wedding preparations.

"We had a pretty short engagement, so it was pretty full on," he said.

"I proposed last June and got married in October ... it was never far from my mind."

Mix in the fear of becoming another victim to the infamous second-year syndrome and Smith admits he created a recipe which did not lend itself to thriving at AFL level.

"Leading into that year I did have the second-year blues in my mind," he said.

"I thought: 'I can't let this happen to me' - and it did. I just over-thought stuff."

Smith conceded he just didn't take time to clear his head.

"There were a lot of expectations on me as well ... and I just didn't get away from the club and refresh myself as much as I wanted to."

It meant that when the promising ruckman was dropped for the Suns' round 10 clash, he wasn't even shocked.

"I was pretty gutted because it was the first time I had been dropped from the senior team at the club," Smith said.

"But I was expecting it a little bit."

After a breakout debut season in 2011 where he finished third in the NAB AFL Rising Star Award, Smith struggled for the consistency he knows he can achieve.

But he is determined to turn it around. The entire coaching staff are certain he can.

"Mentally I'm a lot fresher than I was last year and those things we spoke about are all behind me," he said.

The Rockhampton product is determined to keep the momentum building when the Suns host Brisbane in QClash 5 at Metricon Stadium tomorrow night, when he will spend a lot of time opposing Lions ruckman Matthew Leuenberger.

Gold Coast made two changes to the side defeated by Sydney last Saturday, with Greg Broughton and Jackson Allen replacing Tom Murphy (shoulder) and Dion Prestia (hip).

Allen showed promising signs in his AFL debut against Greater Western Sydney in round 20 last year before groin surgery ended his season.

Renowned for his clean ball use, football manager Marcus Ashcroft expects Allen to slot straight into the Suns' back line.
