THE AFL's injury epidemic has continued with Giants co-captain Phil Davis expected to miss at least six weeks with a back injury - further stretching the AFL cellar-dwellers' thin defensive stocks.

"Phil underwent scans and there was a fracture present so he'll be on a non-weight bearing training program for the next month due to the injury," Giants head of sports science John Quinn said.

"We believe the injury was triggered by a knock to the lower back in recent weeks and it would continue to get worse if he played on."

It will be the first match Davis has missed in his time at GWS after being the only player to play all of the Giants' 22 matches in their debut season.

Davis's absence will only put more pressure on the Giants' back six who have leaked an average of 19.8 goals this season, the worst record in the league with the exception of Melbourne.

Setanta O'hAilpin will also miss Saturday's match against ladder-leaders Essendon with a calf injury.

O'hAilpin has kicked eight goals in his past two games back in the senior team.

The Giants remain winless and face Essendon, Adelaide, Hawthorn and the West Coast Eagles in the next four weeks.

The fledgling club have been badly hit by injuries in their second season with No.1 draft pick Jonathon Patton out for the season following a knee reconstruction and defender Chad Cornes also suffering a long-term knee injury.

Davis's injury comes in the same week Crows star forward Taylor Walker was ruled out for the season with the competition's 15th ACL knee injury.

However, AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou says the spate of serious knee injuries among AFL players can't be blamed on the speed of the game.

Demetriou says he's concerned that there are 13 players needing knee reconstructions after just five rounds.
But he believes it's just bad luck.

"Of course it's worrying," he said yesterday. "But I don't think we should read too much into the fact that there has been 13. I think these things fluctuate. They go through cycles.

"I don't think we can absolutely pinpoint that it's related to hardness of grounds, early part of the season or the pace of the game.

"It's too early to say that."
