TOP-of-the-ladder and undefeated Essendon against bottom-of-the-ladder and winless GWS.

Already hit by injury, the further losses of co-captain Phil Davis with a back injury and surprise avenue to goal Setanta O'hAilpin (calf) leave the Giants terribly undermanned.

The AFL's newest team have managed to increase their ability to score and to stay in matches for longer, but when the rubber band breaks and they lose contact with opposition they fall away dramatically.

Just what the winning margin is for the Bombers will largely depend on their attitude.

If they are hungry for a big winning margin it could get brutal.

Essendon showed a real appetite to go for the kill the last time they played an expansion team, at Etihad Stadium when they beat the Gold Coast Suns in 2011 by 139 points.

The ASADA investigation into the club has bonded the Bombers and helped develop a siege mentality, which won't help the Giants' cause.

Kevin Sheedy will have his hands full plugging the gaps as he takes on his old team for the second time.

KEY MATCH-UPS

CALLAN WARD V JOBE WATSON: This match-up shows just how big is the challenge the Giants face. Ward is much smaller than Watson but is the only player in the GWS midfield with anywhere near the strength and maturity needed to go with the Brownlow medallist. Ward gets a challenging job every week and always shoulders the load well, limiting the damage Watson can inflict will help the Giants' cause in a big way.

DYLAN SHIEL V DAVID ZAHARAKIS: Zaharakis was outstanding in last week's Anzac Day match against the Magpies, kicking a career-high four goals. Shiel, along with Ward, has been one of the Giants' best and most consistent players this year.

JEREMY CAMERON V CALE HOOKER: Cameron was again one of the Giants' best last week, with three goals. With O'hAilpin out with a calf injury and Jonathon Patton out for the season the weight of goal-scoring duties falls very heavily on his shoulders. Hooker was part of a Bombers defence which held Collingwood to 10 goals and Travis Cloke to two last week.

TACTICS

Sheedy will have to use at least one extra player in defence, possibly two.

The Giants have shown they can run the ball well from the back with their talented midfielders.

Containment will be the key for GWS.

VERDICT

Essendon by 95 points.
