KEN Hinkley is confident he has the right young men to lead Port Adelaide's mission to be a respected AFL club after the Power's six-point win against premiership contender West Coast in the NAB Cup at Traeger Park on Saturday.
There is still work to do, but by upsetting the Eagles the Port players have reaffirmed to Hinkley he has a strong platform.
"I was really pleased with our young leadership group,'' he said. "Brad Ebert, Travis Boak as captain was fantastic, Jay Schulz just kept fighting for us and Jackson Trengove was outstanding in the back half. And Hamish (Hartlett).
"All of our leadership stood up.''
Hinkley is close to completing an important pre-season for Port that plays AFL premier Sydney at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.
Beating West Coast gave the Power its most significant win from a 2-2 record in the Cup.
"Certainly for us - we don't make any secret about it - every time we play, we play to win,'' Hinkley said. "We need to get some wins on the board, whether that's in the pre-season or through the home-and-away season. It's always important, no matter when you turn up, that you turn up and play the right way.
"The result was in our favour but even without that, I thought we played the right sort of footy. This club has probably copped a few whacks - and deservedly so over the past couple of years.
"But what they've done (against the Eagles) is they've shown a little bit of courage about how the way they want to play and their want to win.''
Port declared it was injury free after the game. The Power also declared young forward John Butcher had no hip problems after his hit-out for three quarters with SANFL club Port Adelaide Magpies on Friday.
