GUN Fremantle midfielders David Mundy and Nat Fyfe lamented the Dockers' inability to convert their stoppage dominance into a win over Essendon on Friday night.

The Dockers won the clearance count 60-37, including a 13-4 belting in vital centre clearances, but came up empty-handed after a rampaging second-half comeback by the Bombers.

Mundy, the game's leading clearance winner with nine, said Fremantle's forward structure broke down when it mattered.

"We were losing a bit of structure, so we were just kicking forward and we didn't have any forwards," he said.

"We just didn't have numbers there. A lot of the time we were kicking in and it was just Pav (Matthew Pavlich) and Ballas (Hayden Ballantyne) on to three or four of them, and those kind of numbers win out most of the time.

"Obviously the first half was more pleasing than especially the third quarter, but that's just standard. That's how we want to play. It's nothing extraordinary or nothing superhuman; it was just Fremantle football and we went away from that."

Fyfe said the slippery conditions meant the Dockers were not able to get good value from their stoppage control.

"It was a wet, greasy night and I think first use and clearance really didn't tell the full story," he said.

"It wasn't clean. It was going in and coming back out really quickly and it was really scrappy at ground level. I think we lost contested ball by 10 or 15 in the second half, so that was probably more of a key indicator."

Fyfe said the players felt for Chris Mayne but did not blame the hard-working forward for the defeat, after his close-range shot with 21sec remaining hit the post.

"The boys get around him, but it wasn't his fault. It was an opportunity that was missed by the whole team," Fyfe said.

"There's a lot of guys that missed opportunities and it wasn't just one person that had the opportunity to win the game for us. It shouldn't have been that close in the first place."
