Pre-season premiers Brisbane have started the season with two straight defeats after going down at home to Adelaide by 19-points.

"IT WILL be on next week. It will be on, for sure."

Those are the fighting words from Brisbane midfielder Pearce Hanley ahead of this Saturday night's Q Clash against the Gold Coast at Carrara's Metricon Stadium.

It is only April, but if ever there was a must-win match for Brisbane, the fifth instalment of the Sunshine State stoush is it.

Winless after the first two rounds of the home-and-away season, if the Lions are any hope of being a top eight contender they must beat the rising Suns.

"We are due for a win, we know that," Hanley said.

Andrew Hamilton: It's Judgment Day for Lions, Suns

"It is going to be a tough game being a derby, but we are already looking forward to it.

"We are going to give it a real good crack against the Suns."

Hanley was magnificent for Brisbane in a 19-point loss to Adelaide at the Gabba on Saturday, with his 30-disposal effort a shining light on a dreary night.

Lions coach Michael Voss cut an upbeat figure in the post-match media conference, after his side made vast improvements from the diabolical 19.13 (127) to 7.17 (59) round 1 loss to the Western Bulldogs.

But make no mistake, the Lions were wounded after battling for so long against the Crows and coming up empty.

The disappointment was palpable in the eerily quiet Brisbane rooms after the match, as Lions players stared blankly into space.

Lions suddenly in Danger zone

They had gone toe-to-toe with a side that was one straight kick from last year's grand final, but the class of Crows midfield star Patrick Dangerfield and Brisbane's own lack of poise in front of goal had conspired to sink their chances of an upset win.

Hanley said he owed his teammates a much better effort after a quiet day against the Bulldogs at Etihad Stadium.

He added five tackles, six inside 50s and four rebound 50s to his 30 touches.

"Personally, I was embarrassed by my contribution in round 1. I let the boys down," he said.

"It was nice to improve on my performance, but it's still very disappointing to lose.

"We had a good week on the track and we cracked in against the Crows, so I feel like we did ourselves proud.

"We've got plenty to work on ahead of the Suns, but I'm confident we can build on this."
