GOLD Coast must wait another three months to show the Queensland public they can match it with their bigger brothers after losing a gripping Q Clash by two points.

Jared Brennan had another mighty outing against his old side last night.

The winner of the inaugural Marcus Ashcroft Medal was again his side's best.

He swung the game for the Suns but could not manufacture the win.

The Suns had their chances and failed to capitalise.

But it is unfair on the Lions to say it was a game that got away.

Every time the Suns surged, and they had the better of the opening stages of both the third and final quarters, the Lions were able to resist. They deserved the win.

What can be said with complete accuracy is that Q Clash 5 delivered the battle we had been hoping for.

Wet weather and the pressure of the occasion robbed the contest of many passages of sublime skills.

But it was hard fought to the end and, unlike the last meeting between these two sides which was ultra defensive, both sides played to win.

The Suns went into the game knowing Daniel Rich was the danger man.

Karmichael Hunt was given the assignment of stopping the Lions' main distributor and he started brilliantly, winning the very first clearance of the game.

But his primary job was to stop the Lion with the lethal left foot and he wore him like a glove, keeping him to just two touches for the first quarter.

In the second, Rich started at half-back to try to shake the tag.

Hunt went with him and it paid almost immediate dividends when he won a ground level ball, and got it to Harley Bennell for the opening goal. But Rich broke free in the second half to share best afield honours with Brennan.

The Suns' structure appeared to fall apart a little after that.

Their forwards got repeatedly sucked up the ground and Brisbane's defenders stayed anchored inside their 50m and when the ball came in long they were able to take too many uncontested marks.

At the other end Jonathan Brown stayed deep which gave him one-on-one opportunities with Rory Thompson.

Thompson battled gallantly and won a few contests but Brown was too big, too strong and too experienced and he started to have a major influence on the contest.

When he booted his fifth the Suns made the change, switching veteran Matthew Warnock on to Brown.
