THE Swans netting Kurt Tippett was a huge coup but it will be dwarfed by the impact Lance Franklin can make at the Giants.

Franklin would be the biggest catch in the AFL since Tony Lockett came to the harbour city in 1995.

With a price tag of $12 million over six years he would be the most expensive player in the game's history but worth every cent, especially to a Giants side that is winless this season and averaging crowds of just 6641 at Skoda Stadium.

In a game where key forwards are king, Franklin has been the best in the business for the past six years.

Lockett captivated the Sydney market when he kicked 462 goals in his six seasons in the red and white and Franklin has the footballing ability and charisma to match Plugger's impact.

At the age of 26 he still has an enormous amount to give. Most full forwards play well into their 30s.

While the price is high in dollar terms, the Giants will only have to give up one first-round draft pick for Franklin under free agency rules.

The Giants had to fork out two first-round draft selections to Melbourne for Tom Scully, as did the Gold Coast Suns for Gary Ablett.

The only downside for the Giants might be making sure Franklin stays focused off the field.

Last month in Melbourne the Hawks superstar had to apologise for shouting at Swimsuit company owner Nicky Roswell in a Chapel St bar.

Despite the apology, Franklin took to Twitter the following day to defend his actions.

He is familiar with the Kings Cross nightlife and a regular visitor when he takes time away from football.

Franklin would not be short of friends in Sydney and has links with several rugby union stars. His sister Bianca plays netball for the Adelaide Thunderbirds and is married to former Wallaby Matt Giteau.

The Giants have the bye this week and would not comment directly on Franklin's potential move to the club at the end of the season.

"We are not going to provide a running commentary of every player who may be out of contract or become a free agent at the end of this season," Giants spokesman Nick Johnston said.
