PORT Adelaide senior assistant Alan Richardson says he hasn't considered the vacant Melbourne job.

Richardson, one of the most experienced and highly-regarded assistants in the AFL never to have been given a senior job, says he's focused solely on developing Port's young list.

"(Becoming a head coach) was definitely an ambition of mine but when I took on this position it coincided with a change in opinion in that perspective," said Richardson, whose portfolio at Alberton involves overseeing the development of all of Port's coaches.

"I wanted to be more involved in the management and strategic planning of a footy department and the footy program going forward. And I'm really enjoying it.

"I'm just so focused on what we're doing here. I'm really loving it here. I see myself massively involved in what we're doing here so haven't given it (the Melbourne job) any thought at all."

Most pundits have suggested the Demons need an experienced coach after the failed experiments with Dean Bailey and Mark Neeld.

Former Power coach Mark Williams, former Swans and Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade and former Swans coach Paul Roos have been listed as the main contenders - although Roos doesn't appear interested in the role.

But Richardson, who served as an assistant at the Western Bulldogs, Collingwood, Essendon and Carlton before joining Port late last year, believes the Demons should keep their options open.

"I don't know what they're looking for," he said.

"What I do know is that any footy club that turns things around does it on the back of development and team success as opposed to - let's go and get this coach because he's got a high profile.

"Ultimately they have to pick a coach who is going to develop their team and their culture.

"If that's an experienced person in their opinion then they should get an experienced person. If it is someone that is not experienced they shouldn't be ruled out.

"In my opinion, that's the way they should be thinking. But that's their decision not mine."
